The helpless feeling that overwhelmed him was almost physically painful as he cursed himself for not being more curious when his father had taken him to Skoth. He reached for a glass of water on a nearby table but the cup jumped out of reach and clattered to the floor. Glass and water sprayed across the carpet. Adrian stood up as his whole room shook- he rushed out his door and followed the long halls until he found a way outside. The stench of mud and decaying things hit Adrian like a bolt of lightning. But the smell wasn’t the most astonishing and horrifying thing facing Adrian. A huge monster towered above him, grass and moss growing from its body and head. Roots hung off its arms and it looked as if it had been built from the earth itself. Adrian knew immediately who had sent it. Mrok. The monster let out an ear-shattering roar and lunged toward Adrian. Rolling out of the way, Adrian looked toward the volcano entrance, wondering if the others could hear what was going on outside. The only weapon he had on him was his hunting knife, and he pulled this out of its sheath even though it would likely do nothing to help him. A huge foot sped toward him and Adrian rolled away just before he was squished into jelly. He had to stay alive to find Stella.Adrian held his puny weapon in front of him in a guard position. He had been trained to take on monsters but this one was bigger than any he’d faced before. It towered above him and looked at him with its gigantic green eyes. Adrian’s own light blue eyes met the monster’s eyes and he clenched his fists. This was it. Live or die. Adrian ran as fast as he could under the monster’s legs and cut across its left leg with his knife. It stepped away from him with an angry growl and swiped at him with a huge, tree-like arm. Adrian didn’t have time to move away and he was hit right in the gut and flung into the air. Wind rushed past his face, blowing back his black hair from his eyes. He landed on the ground and groaned in pain. His fingers gripped the grass under him- that did not feel good at all. Colors danced in his vision and the world spun around him. He saw the monster step in front of him but it looked like the thing had three bodies that were spinning around each other. He supposed he was just going to die.The air suddenly got very cold and the sun disappeared from the sky. Everything was cast into blackness. Adrian backed up into a tree and didn’t move for fear of banging into something. Red light streaked across his vision and he could hear the sounds of something slicing through dirt, rock, and wood. Fire burst to life in front of him and he realized Celina had come out and somehow blotted out the sun before slicing the monster into a pile of flaming wood and rock. The sun faded back into the sky and warmth filled the air again. Celina smiled at Adrian.
